  • Birth*: (?) MacDonnell was born in 1790 in On the Atlantic, during the voyage across..1
  • Marriage*: He married Mary MacDonald, daughter of Angus MacDonald, circa 1820.3
  • Death*: (?) MacDonnell died in 1870 in St. Andrews, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada.1
  • Biography*: According to Drummer on Foot "Donald and John were blacksmiths. When young men they came to Antigonish and pursued their trade at the East End, about where the residence of the late D. McDonald, Municipal Clerk, is now situated. Donald from Antigonish to St. Andrews, and made his permanent home on the pretty and commanding eminence a few yards south of the Church. Here, also, he worked at his trade. In due time, he purchased the farm previously occupied by Mr. William Chisholm, who removed to Summerside, Ant. Co. Situated in such a central location, a good tradesman for his time, a justice of the peace and a man of fine social qualities and personal magnetism, the “Gobhaiun Garaidhnach” was among the best known and most popular men in the parish, in his time. He must have inherited much of the physical stamina of his father, for when approaching four score years, with his head white as the driven snow, his figure was erect and lithe, and his step was active and elastic, as a young man’s.1

  • Birth*: Donald MacDonnell [Garaidhnach] was born circa 1770 in Glengarry, Inverness-shire, Scotland.1
  • Immigration*: He and Mary Scott immigrated circa 1790.2
  • Residence*: Donald MacDonnell [Garaidhnach] and Mary Scott lived after 1790 in Nine Mile River, Hants, Nova Scotia, Canada.2
  • Death*: Donald MacDonnell [Garaidhnach] died before 1914 in at the age of 105 years and ten months, Nine Mile River, Hants, Nova Scotia, Canada.1
  • Biography*: According to Drummer on Foot "This family formerly resided at St. Andrews, but as the only one of them now living in this parish resides at Dunmore, Ant. Co., I take up the sketch here.
In this place the name is written with two “n’s”, and accented on the last syllable, in other places, as Ontario and the Old Country, it is written with one “n” with the accent on the first syllable. “Garaidhnach” is merely a distinction derived from the name of the district in Scotland whence they came, -- Glengarry, (Glenn Garaidh). The appellation is formed from the last syllables of the Gaelic name, just as people from Lochaber are called “Abraich.”
There would, in my opinion, be a justification for the first form for the pronounciation (sic) of the latter, with the accent on the first syllable, would sound very similar to our pronounciation (sic) of another name, --McDonald, -- for we seldom sound the last letter in it. In the old country, there were the McDonells of Glengarry, with their flag and “Coat of Arms,” and the McDonells of Keppoch with their flag. The later would likely be a sept of the former, with a slightly different flag, the coat of arms being confined to the “Head of the Clan.” The McDonells of this sketch are the Glengarry stock.
Donald McDonell, the progenitor of this family in Nova Scotia, immigrated from Glengarry, Scotland, about the year 1790. His wife’s name was Mary Scott. They settled at Nine Mile River, Hants Co., where they died and where some of their descendants now live. This gentleman must have had in him the stuff of which men are made. He lived to the age of one hundred and five years and ten months. When over one hundred and four years he chopped the firewood for his stove, and at harvest time, following the reapers in the grain field, he bound fifteen sheaves of barley, a process to strain the spine of one less than half his age."1
