Hugh Gillis, Bridge, passed away yesterday evening (January 3rd, 1903.) in his 84th year. The deceased, considering the limited educational advantages of his boyhood’s days, was, on account of his natural intelligence and good common sense, remarkably well informed, and was highly respected in the community. A widow, three sons, and one daughter survive him. May his soul rest in peace.⁵

Biography: He immigrated to Canada in 1821 and was naturalized in 1823. The 1881 Census lists Hugh as a farmer. The 1901 Census says that Hugh could both read and write in English, but not French. His native tongue was Gaelic. He was living with his son Malcolm at the time of the 1901 census.^4,1
