Biography*: Neil MacQuilkin appears as Niel MacQuillan in the 1818 Cape Breton census: age 30, married
with one child. He had been in Cape Breton for three years at that time. He is mentioned in HIC, p.616 and in
Donald Whyte's "A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada Before Confederation", Vol. I, p.321, where he
appears as Niel MacQuillan. There was another family in the Margaree area named Wilkins but they appear to be
of English-born Irish/Welsh ancestry.

The MacQuilkins/MacQuillans were from the Glens of Antrim, Islay and Kintyre branches of Clan Donald. Some
of them later anglicized their name as Wilkinson or Wilkins. One branch settled in North Carolina.⁴
