    Margaree Forks

    Patrick Angus Gillis, pioneer enthusiast of farming and community progress throughout Inverness County, passed away at his home in Margaree Forks on March 6. He was 94.
    Born at Margaree Forks, march 17, 1865, Mr. Gillis was the son of the late Hugh and Annie (MacDonnell) Gillis. An active farmer, “Paddy” was also engaged for many years in the tanning industry which coupled with his wide communal interests, brought him life-long friendships even beyond his native county.
    In 1898, he married Cassie Chisholm of Glassburn, Antigonish County, who passed away in 1951. Fond memories are still associated with the Gillis home at “The Forks”
    where scores of friends had come to know sincere and unsparing hospitality.
    Three of 14 children predeceased him: Major Archie Gillis, who died in 1956 while serving with the Canadian Army in Germany; Jean, who died in 1934 while a nurse-in-training at Boston City Hospital, and a son, Hugh John, who died in infancy.
    Survivors include: James, Hugh, John, Roddie and Resa (Mrs. C. MacAdam), all of Margaree Forks; John, BCL, Toronto, Donald, Spragge, Ont., Agnes (Mrs. Volbert) Edmonton; Colin, Sommerville (sic) Mass; Mary (Mrs. A MacDonald), Annie and Alexander, all of Boston. A sister, Mrs. Patrick Chisholm of Margaree Harbor died last August.
    The funeral was held March 9 at St. Michael’s Church in Margaree with Requiem Mass celebrated by Msgr. A. Boudreau, P.P. Interment was in the parish cemetery with Rev. P.A. MacLellan assisting at the graveside.1
