Requiem in Broad Cove for Father MacEachern

Final tribute was paid Tuesday to well known diocesan priest, Rev. Dougald MacEachern, who died in St. Martha’s Hospital February 8 at the age of 73.

Father MacEachern had been in poor health for some time and was confined to hospital for the past several years.

Half-brother to Most Rev. Malcolm MacEachern, Bishop of Charlottetown, Father MacEachern was pastor of St. Margaret’s parish, Arisaig and the adjacent mission Lismore for a total of 21 years.

In the early days of the co-operative movement, Father MacEachern was very active in this field. Beloved by all his parishioners, he held a position of esteem and reverence throughout eastern Nova Scotia.

Father MacEachern was born January 20, 1890, at Broad Cove Chapel, Inverness County, son of Alexander MacEachern and Catherine MacFarlane

He attended public schools in Inverness and was graduated from St. Francis Xavier University. He studied at the Grand Seminary in Montreal and was ordained in Montreal in 1921.

He was appointed assistant pastor at St. Joseph’s parish, North Sydney the same year, and served until 1928 when he was named parish priest at St. Margaret’s, Arisaig. In 1949, he was named pastor of St. Mary’s in Mabou. He retired in July of 1956.

Besides Bishop MacEachern, he is survived by two sister, Catherine, (Mrs. John A. H. MacLellan), Broad Cove; and Sister Louise Florence of the Sisters of Charity at St. Peter’s Convent, Dartmouth.

He was predeceased by a sister, Mary (Mrs. John D. MacDonald) of Lismore, and a brother, Donald A. MacEachern of Broad Cove; as well as several brothers and sisters who died in infancy.

The remains of Father MacEachern rested at the chapel of St. F. X. University Sunday night. Members of St. Ninian’s Council, Knights of Columbus assembled in a body to recite the rosary. Father MacEachern was a member of the Port Hood council.

Requiem Mass was celebrated in the chapel Monday morning at nine o’clock after which the remains were transferred to Broad Cove Chapel. Office for the Dead was recited Monday night.

Pontifical Requiem Mass was celebrated Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 in Broad Cove Chapel by Bishop MacEachern. The sermon was preached by Rev. John Hugh MacEachern, P. P., St. Anthony’s, Glace Bay.
