James A. Gillis1

M, #298, b. 1859, d. 29 May 1909

The ancestry chart of Archibald MacFarlane (ID # 34) is presented because he unites the ancestry of both his parents. If an individual appears more than once in Archibald's chart this indicates descent from the individual in more than one line. By clicking on the each instance (i.e. Ancestry of Archibald MacFarlane (#5)) each line of descent will be shown.

Please be patient until the page fully loads.

  • Illness*: James A. Gillis was ill with asthma.5
  • Birth*: James was born in 1859 in Inverness, Nova Scotia, Canada.3,2,6,7
  • Marriage*: He married Magdalena Schott, daughter of Charles Albert Schott and Pauline B. Stoezl, on 25 November 1888 in Colorado Springs, El Paso, Colorado, USA; Film Number: 001690080.8,9,10,11,7,12,13
  • Residence*: James A. Gillis and Magdalena Schott lived between 1891 and 1896 in on the old family farm, SW Margaree, Inverness, Nova Scotia, Canada; The youngest sibling and youngest son of John Gillis and Anne Macfarlane (James Gillis)left Colorado with his American wife and two small children and returned to Southwest Margaree in 1891. He inherited the old farm which was located on the hill above our home in Southwest. From this information I have to assume John Gillis, his father must have passed away around this time period. Due to serious health issues (asthma) James Gillis only remained on the farm with his family for five years. He spent the next eleven years residing in North Sydney working as a carpenter. He is recorded on the census of 1901 in North Sydney along with his wife Magdalena as having issue; six children. Comparing the ages of the children with the time period he spent in Southwest, it appears at least one or two of the children were born in Southwest.5
  • Residence: James A. Gillis and Magdalena Schott lived between 1896 and 1907 in North Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada.5
  • Residence: James A. Gillis and Magdalena Schott lived between 1907 and 1909 in Colorado, USA.5

  • Death*: He died on 29 May 1909 in Colorado Springs, El Paso, Colorado, USA; Pulmonary Tuberculosis.8,15,9,10
  • Biography*: The 1871 Census lists him as going to school. The 1881 Census lists him as a joiner.6,16
