He inherited the old farm which was located on the hill above our home in Southwest. From this information I have to assume John Gillis, his father must have passed away around this time period. Due to serious health issues (asthma) James Gillis only remained on the farm with his family for five years. He spent the next eleven years residing in North Sydney working as a carpenter. He is recorded on the census of 1901 in North Sydney along with his wife Magdalena as having issue; six children. Comparing the ages of the children with the time period he spent in Southwest, it appears at least one or two of the children were born in Southwest.⁹
