It is related of them, when yet all at home, they formed themselves into a debating club, discussing appropriate subjects, one evening in English, another in Gaelic. Nancy Gillis 84

    William’s Point

On Monday morning, April 24th, 1911, there passed to her reward, at William’s Point, Ant. Co, Nancy relict of the late John Gillis of that place, the youngest and last surviving member of the family of Ewan and Margaret Cameron. She was born at Middle South River, on August 3?th, 1837, and was thus within a few months of ninety four years. Like all that first born native generation of the place, she possessed their particular traits of character and admirable virtues, which made their lives truly inspiring lessons. Her life, like the rest, was one of unremitting industry; careful without being __(?)__, non-abusive of the things of earth, dispensing worthy charity with overflowing measure, scorning luxury and excessive pleasures for humble comfort and christian happiness in the home. When the infirmities of age rendered her incapable of doing work, her mental faculties unimpaired to the end, evidenced cheerful submission, and death, not as a terror, was awaited with the beautifully confident trust and edifying hope of a dutiful soul going to the all Merciful Father. She leaves to mourn her, three sons, four daughters, many grand and great grand-children and a wide circle of friends who will utter a fervent prayer for her soul. After Requiem High Mass, on Wednesday morning, the 25th, her funeral took place from the Cathedral at Antigonish. May her soul rest in peace.4

  • Biography*: From Drummer on Foot we have:

"Old John Boyd, sometimes called the “Bard,” was a man of more than ordinary talents. He was justly regarded as a model Christian and an ideal citizen. He knew his mother tongue well, and like many more of his time, could readily arrange his ideas in poetical form. He composed many good songs worthy of being preserved.

On a certain occasion his neighbor, John McIsaac, had a mowing party. In the evening when the work was finished, Mr. Boyd joined the party, by invitation, of courser (sic). Mr. McIsaac approached with the indispensable accessory of the time, and passing the glass to John Boyd, demanded a toast. There was, at the time, in the locality, a young damsel, attractive in look and charming in manner. (They are all so now). (sic) By common consent she was called the “Doll.” It at once occurred to the bard that his impromptu toast would not be complete nor at all satisfactory to the young gallants present without a reference to her. Without hesitation or more ado, he sang the following:

“Doech slainte na ‘n gillean a ‘gearradh a flar,
Le’n spealan cho guineach, s’nach fagadh iad dios,
Ged ruig-inn ga n’ sireadh, O’n Ear gus an Iar,
Cha n’ faighinn an ionann, mur dean mi a briag,
Nis o’n lom sibh na paircean, s’ nach dh’ fag sibh aon dlo,
Cha n’ urrainn mi aicheadh, nach ard mi le bosd,
S’ mur dean mi ‘ur paigheadh, ni s’ fearr na le ol,
So suas i le ailleas, air, slainte na “Doll.”."3
