    South West Margaree

    On Sunday July 20th, the community of South West Margaree, was shocked at the sudden death of Hugh A. Gillis. Although in failing health for the past three years, Hugh “Sandy” was he was familiarly known to all, had been recuperating at home for the past year when he suffered a heart attack and was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital at Inverness, where he died.

    Born at Upper Margaree in 1886, son of Alexander Gillis and Catherine Gillis, Hugh (Sandy” was a carpenter by trade, and worked practically all his years throughout industrial Cape Breton, and until his illness was frequently called upon for his technical advice. Of very congenial disposition, an ardent Catholic, the late Mr. Gillis was well known to young and old, and his high Christian character was evidenced by the many people who paid their respects to a very dear friend and neighbor.

    Surviving to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father are his wife, Sarah, two daughters, Katherine (Mrs. Alcide Aucoin) Quincy Mass; Christene, Boston, Mass. Two daughters predeceased him, Joan and Isabel (Mrs. John Millican) Sons, Alex, Vancouver; Patrick, Garson, Ont; Dougald, N.W.T., and James M. at home. Mr. Gillis is also survived by three sisters, Mary J. (Mrs. Angus MacFarlane); Margaret A., at S.W. Margaree and Isabel, Mrs. Louis MacIsaac, Inverness, and three brothers, James, Boston Mass., John Dan, Offrino, Idaho, and Angus Allan, Upper Margaree, N.S.

    Funeral service was held July 24th from St. Joseph’s Church, where Rev. D.F. Roberts, P.P., officiated. Pall bearers were: John H. Gillis; John P. Chisholm; James Gillis; Malcolm MacFarlane; Joseph MacDougall and Cyril Collins.4

    Rev. Alexander Douglas MacFarlane 83, ST. PETER'S

    The death of Rev. Alexander Douglas MacFarlane, retired priest of the Diocese of Antigonish, occurred at Richmond Villa, St. Peter's on Aug.t 12, 2005. Born in Port Hastings, he was the son of the late Murdoch A. and Catherine (MacDougall) MacFarlane. He received his early education in Port Hastings and later attended high school in Port Hood and Port Hawkesbury. He graduated from St. F.X. University and did his theological training at Holy Heart Seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 7, 1952. During his priestly ministry, he served in various parishes as curate, administrator and parish priest. He served as Assistant at Stella Maris, Pictou, St. Joseph, Reserve Mines and St. Joseph, Sydney. In 1960 he was appointed parish priest at St. Ann, Thorburn, followed by pastorates at Our Lady of Sorrow, Gannon Road, St. Joseph, Antigonish County, Holy Cross, Glace Bay and St. Mary, East Bay, from which he retired in 1987.
    The last member of his immediate family, he is survived by in-laws, J. Laughlin MacDougall, Sydney and Carol MacFarlane, Ottawa. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, John (Isabel) and Dougall (Carol) and two sisters, Sarah (Laughlin) MacDougall and Mary. Visitation will be in St. Mary's Church, East Bay, today (Monday),Aug. 15, 2005, from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, from 12 until time of funeral at 2 p.m. with Rev. Angus MacDougall,Vicar General and other priests concelebrating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Church Renovation Fund, East Bay, Richmond Villa, St.Peter's or charity of choice.2
