McNEIL, Mary Joan "Joanie" of West Roxbury passed away peacefully on December 31, 2020, at the age of 85. She was the beloved daughter of the late Hugh and Rose (MacFarlane) McNeil. Dear sister of the late James McNeil and his wife the late Eileen, the late Barbara McNeil, late Hugh McNeil and his late wife Leonie of Weymouth. Loving aunt of Kathryn and Susan McNeil of Mansfield and William McNeil and his wife Corina of Buzzards Bay. Also survived by many loving great-nieces and nephews and one great-great niece. Mary was a proud lifelong Bostonian. She was a graduate of Holy Trinity High School in Roxbury. After graduation she began working at John Hancock where she retired after many years of service in their Human Resources Division. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend visitation in the William J. Gormley Funeral Home, 2055 Centre Street, WEST ROXBURY on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. (Please follow all COVID-19 guidelines including use of facial coverings and social distancing). A private mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Theresa of Avila Church at 11 o'clock. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery. Hugh J. McNeil
Hugh J. McNeil, WFD Retired, passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at the Queen Anne Nursing Home in Hingham. He was 80 years of age. Beloved husband of 54 years to Leonie (McAskill) McNeil. Son of the late Hugh A. and Rose (MacFarlane) McNeil. Hugh is survived by his loving daughters, Christine A. married to Arthur Purkis of North Smithfield, RI, Laura married to Edward Wiessmeyer of Weymouth and Kathleen married to John Coughlin of Whitman. Devoted grandfather of Amanda and Mark Purkis, Eric, Lauren and Kurt Wiessmeyer and Sean and Bryan Coughlin. Loving brother of Barbara A. and Mary J. McNeil both of W. Roxbury and the late James McNeil. Hugh was born and raised in Roxbury and was a graduate of the High School of Commerce in Boston. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. Hugh retired in 1994 after 29 years as a Weymouth Firefighter. He was also a member of the Fr. O’Brien Council Knights of Columbus in North Weymouth. Hugh was a quiet, gentle man whose life revolved around his wife Best Pal Lonie, his three girls and his seven grandchildren. Funeral from the North Weymouth, McDonald Funeral Home, 40 Sea St., (off Rte. 3A at Bicknell Sq.), Monday at 8:00 a.m. Funeral Mass to follow in St. Jerome’s Church at 9:00 a.m. and burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Randolph. Obituary
Arthur H. Purkis 67, of Rocky Rd., Otisfield, ME, passed away on June 25, 2021, at Gosnell Hospice House. He was the beloved husband of Christine (McNeil) Purkis. Arthur and Christine had previously resided in North Smithfield for thirty-five years where they raised their children. Born in Millis, MA he was a son of the late John and Naomi (McKee) Purkis. Arthur was a commercial insurance underwriter for several companies including The Hartford Insurance Co., Royal Insurance Co., CNA Insurance Co., Travelers Insurance, and EMC Insurance. During his career, Arthur achieved his CPCU designation.
Besides his wife he leaves his son, Mark A. Purkis and wife Stephanie of Hudson, MA; his daughter, Amanda L. Purkis of Cumberland, RI; siblings, John “Jack” Purkis of TN, Alan Purkis of Wrentham, MA, Susan Purkis of Acton, ME, and Gail Purkis of Upton, MA, two grandchildren, Riley and Olivia and several nieces and nephews.
Arthur was a huge sports fan and took great pleasure in coaching his children’s softball, basketball, and soccer teams. He was also an avid New England fan and especially loved the Patriots.
His funeral will be held Friday at 10:00 AM at the Fournier & Fournier Funeral Home, 463 South Main St., Woonsocket, with a service in the Funeral Home at 11:00 AM. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery will be private. Visiting hours are Thursday 4-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations to Gosnell Memorial Hospice Home, 11 Hunnewell Rd., Scarborough, ME 04074 in his memory would be appreciated.

MacDougall
Archie A. MacDougall, a resident of MacGillivary Guest House, passed away March 15th, 2004. This fine and gentle person was born in South West Margaree, the son of Joseph A. and Kathryn (MacFarlane) MacDougall. Archie is survived by two sisters, Margaret MacDonald, Sydney, and Agatha Merritt, Greenwich, Conn; special nephew Jim MacDonald, Oshawa, Ont; and several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded by brothers Donald, John, Francis and sisters Rita, Mae, Kathryn and Florence. Archie was even kind in death in donating his body to Dalhousie University for research.
