  • Name-Reli: Her religious name was Sister St. Stanislaus.4,5
  • Birth*: Anne was born on 11 April 1848 in St. Andrews, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada.2,3,1
  • Baptism: Anne (Sister St. Stanislaus) Cameron was baptized on 14 April 1848 in St. Andrew's Church, St. Andrews, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada.1
  • Obituary: Her obituary reads:

Sister St. Stanislaus (Annie Cameron), a niece of the late Bishop Cameron of Antigonish, was born at Lower South River, one of seventeen children of Allan Cameron and Catherine MacGillivray.

Sister St. Stanislaus was educated at the Convent of the Congregation de Notre Dame at Arichat and entered the novitiate sixty-seven years ago, a time in our history when even the journey from Antigonish to Montreal was still something of an epic adventure for a young girl. She was the first of that long line of young women from this diocese who have consecrated themselves to God in that Congregation. Her early religious life was passed in Waterbury, Conn., where after a few years of teaching she was appointed superior. Until the closing years of her life she was to continue in that position of responsibility - in Lewiston, Me. and in Cornwall, Ont. In her later years she returned to Nova Scotia with the ripened fruit of experience of years and of virtue to spend her last years of work in her native province as Superior of Mount Carmel, in New Waterford, in Port Hood, and lastly in Mabou from which mission she retired to pray away her remaining years in the Mother House in Montreal. To the end she was indefatigable in the pursuit of perfection, and retained her intelligent interest in people and affairs, her selfless concern for others, and her piquant and delightful vein of humour.

Sixty-seven years in the intimate service of God, in prayer and sacrifice, in teaching His little ones to Know God and to follow more closely Jesus Christ Whom He has sent, all this implies such a record of heavenly service as few may rightly estimate or even faintly comprehend. Still less may they penetrate a personality fashioned by such a life. Particularly in the case of Sister St. Stanislaus is this difficult, for her humble ambition was ever to live unthought-of by any. A casual meeting with her left one with the impression of gentleness and sweet yielding: a longer acquaintance left no doubt that with the gentleness there was in Sister Stanislaus the unflinching, unyielding courage of all true followers of the great Lochiel, but in her it was turned wholly to the service of a cross-burdened Chief. With tireless energy, in one so frail - little short of heroic - she sought out in heat of summer or winter's blast the dwelling of the sick, the sorrowful, above all the ignorant and sinful with kindly ministrations and gentle words of comfort, or even gentler words of admonition.

In each parish to which obedience called this gentle woman her advent was coincident with an awakening of charity and fervor. Not that Sister St. Stanislaus did anything spectacular or ever tired (sic) to speak impressively but because, as has been said of another holy religious "They used her kindness as one uses water - without thinking of it, for they were sure to find it ever fresh and ever new. Was she not their own, making herself all things to all, in order to gain all for Christ?"2

  • Death*: Angus died on 15 July 1908 in Mount Cameron, Antigonish, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada, at age 64.3
  • Obituary: His obituary reads:

He studied in the district school and St. Francis Xavier's College, after which he taught school for some time. His excellent character and more than ordinary talents, together with an evident vocation for the priesthood, led to his being chosen by Bishop McKinnon for the great privilege of a Roman education, and he entered the famous College of the Propaganda on November 17, 1866. In due course he took a doctorate both in Philosophy and Theology and was ordained at Easter, 1874.

On his arrival home in that year he was appointed pastor of Christmas Island, where he remained till he was called to be Rector of St. Francis Xavier's College in July, 1876. For eight years he remained in that position, at the end of which time the growth of Sydney Mines demanded that it should be made a separate parish and Dr. Cameron became its first pastor. But his health, which had never been robust, was not equal to the strain, and in August, 1888, he returned to the less strenuous labor of ministering to the good people of Christmas Island, where he had spent the first two years of his priestly life. Here the last years of his active career were spent. About the first of the year it was discovered that a deadly cancer had fastened its fangs upon him, and he retired to Mount Cameron to await the end.

Dr. Cameron was one of the most lovable of men, conspicuous for his gentle courtesy even among those to whom that quality is no stranger. His modesty may have hidden the depth of his learning from those who were not somewhat closely associated with him. But those who were privileged to know him intimately can testify both to the extent of his erudition and to the eminent degree of priestly virtue which he attained.3
  • Burial*: He was buried after 15 July 1908 in Pomquet, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada.2

He was then appointed to the parish of Creignish, which he zealously administered for nine years, at the end of which time he sought the austerities of monastic life.

    Rev. Donald Cameron                         A5-1884-121-2

    Death of Rev. Father Andrew

At the Trappist Monastery, Tracadie, at 8 o'clock yesterday evening, Father Andrew, as he was known in the religious order, but better known to our readers as the Rev. Donald Cameron, ended the pure and holy career that so well prepared him for eternity. He was stricken down with fever about ten days ago, and during the last few days scarcely any hope of recovery remained. His brother, Rev. Rector of St. Francis Xavier's College, when leaving for Tracadie yesterday, fully expected the fatal result we have sorrowfully recorded. Father Andrew was a nephew of of (sic) His Lordship Bishop Cameron. During eleven years after his ordination he labored zealously as a parish-priest in the Diocese; but his great desire for closer union with God and conscious of being called to the religious life led him to join the Trappist Order, which he did about a year and a half ago. The press is waiting for this week's issue of the AURORA, and we must postpone till next issue a fuller account of the edifying life of the Rev. deceased. - Requiescat in pace.

    The Rev. Father Andrew

The Rev. Father Andrew O.C.R., whose death at the Monastery we recorded last week, was born at South River in this County in 1840. Educated at St. Francis Xavier's College, he was ordained priest at Arichat by his Lordship Bishop Cameron on Trinity Sunday 1871. The present Rt. Rev. Abbot of the Monastery was ordained priest by His Lordship the same day. For about a year Father Cameron had pastoral charge at Georgeville, and during the next year he assisted the Rev. J. Shaw in administering the parish of Little Glace Bay, which then comprised the mission of Cow Bay. He was then appointed to the parish of Creignish, which he zealously administered for nine years, at the end of which time he sought the austerities of monastic life. An unswerving devotion to duty's call and a life of prayer marked his course to the end.1
  • Death*: Andrew died on 22 April 1884 in Tracadie, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada.4,5
  • Biography*: Father Andrew was a nephew of His Lordship Bishop Cameron. During eleven years after his ordination he labored as a parish priest in the Diocese of Antigonish.

For about a year after his ordination he had pastoral charge at Georgeville, and during the next year he assisted the Rev. J. Shaw in administering the parish of Little Glace Bay, which then comprised the mission of Cow Bay. He was then appointed to the parish of Creignish, which he zealously administered for nine years.

But his great desire for closer union with God and conscious of being called to the religious life led him to join the Trappist Order.6
