  • Birth*: John "Mor" Lamont 3rd Chief of Clan Lamont was born in 1296 in Lamont, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.1
  • Death*: He died in 1353 in Scotland.1
  • Biography*: During the Wars of Scottish Independence, Sir John Lamont, Laumon's grandson and the Chief of the clan, sided with the MacDougall's of Lorne against Robert the Bruce. The MacDougall bid for the throne was foiled, and the Lamonts suffered along with their allies. Once Robert the Bruce was firmly situated on the throne, he and his line took vengeance against the clans that had opposed him. In 1371, Robert II gave the Lamont hereditary seat at Dunoon to Bruce supporter Sir Colin Campbell, Black Knight of Loch Awe.

By the end of the 14th century, almost all of Clan Lamont's original Cowal territory had been lost to the Campbells. In spite of considerable intermarriage between Clan Campbell and Clan Lamont, the relations between Campbell clansmen and Lamont clansmen remained harsh and bitter.2

  • Birth*: Malcolm MacLauman (Lamont) 2nd Chief of Clan Lamont was born circa 1250 in Scotland.1
  • Death*: He died circa 1296 in Scotland.1
  • Biography*: Clan Lamont is a Highland Scottish clan. The clan is said to descend from Ánrothán Ua Néill, an Irish prince of the O'Neill dynasty. As a part of this lineage, the clan claims descent from the legendary Niall Noigíallach, High King of Ireland. Clan Ewen of Otter, Clan MacNeil of Barra, Clan MacLachlan, and Clan Sweeney are also descendants of Anrothan, and thus are distant kin to Clan Lamont. Lamont and associated kinsmen are thus descendants of Conn Cétchathach.

Clan Lamont's historical domain was a prominent one; for centuries, they powerfully ruled almost all of the rugged lands of the Cowal peninsula in Argyll. However, Clan Lamont was severely crippled by the Dunoon Massacre in 1646, when Campbell clansmen brutally murdered around 200 Lamont clan members. As a result of this and other events, Clan Lamont was repressed into smaller areas of Cowal.3

  • Marriage*: She married Sir James Douglas of Dalkieth, son of Sir John Douglas and Agnes (?), on 21 November 1372 in Scotland.4,2,5
  • Biography*: Agnes Dunbar (fl. late 14th century) was a mistress of King David II of Scotland, son of Robert the Bruce.

She was the niece (and possibly fosterling) of Agnes Randolph, Countess of Dunbar and March. Her mother was Isabella Randolph, sister of Countess Agnes and daughter of Thomas Randolph, first Earl of Moray. Her father, Sir Patrick Dunbar, was the son of Sir Alexander Dunbar and grandson of Patrick, seventh Earl of Dunbar, and his wife, Cecilia.

She was first married to a man called Robert, and they had children.

She appears to have become a mistress of King David II around 1369, as payments to her began then. A payment of 1000 merks, a very large sum at that time, was arranged for her a month before the king died suddenly in February 1371, which indicates that he had been very likely planning to marry her.

On 21 November 1372 she married Sir James Douglas of Dalkeith. Their son was James Douglas, 1st Lord Dalkeith. Their great-grandson was James Douglas, 1st Earl of Morton.6

  • Birth*: Edmund (?) Prince of Cumbria was born after 1070 in Scotland.1,2
  • Death*: He died after 1097 in Scotland.2
  • Biography*: Edmund or Etmond mac Maíl Coluim (after 1070 – after 1097) was a son of Malcolm III of Scotland and his second wife Margaret. He may be found on some lists of Scottish kings, but there is no evidence that he was king. Although Edmund was likely Malcolm and Margaret's second son, he was passed over in subsequent successions as a result of betraying his siblings by siding with their uncle, Donald Bane.

On the death of Edmund's father and his heir-designate, Edward, his eldest son by Margaret, in November 1093, Edmund's uncle Donald Bane (Domnall Bán) took the throne. Edmund and his younger brothers Edgar, Alexander and David fled abroad, to England, to join their half-brother Donnchad at the court of William Rufus.

In 1094 Donnchad, with Rufus's blessing and the support of landless nobles from the English court and landowners in Lothian, drove Domnall Bán from the throne. It is supposed that Edmund, as the next in age, was Donnchad's heir-designate. Donnchad was forced by a rebellion to send his English allies home, and was shortly afterwards killed. The killer was Máel Petair, Mormaer of Mearns, but the Annals of Ulster and William of Malmesbury agree that the killing was done on the orders of Domnall Bán and Edmund.

What caused Edmund to join with his uncle is unknown. It is assumed that Domnall appointed him his heir as Domnall had no sons of his own, and it is thought that Edmund was granted an appanage to rule.

Edmund's maternal uncle Edgar Ætheling came north in 1097, driving Domnall from the throne and installing Edgar as King, with Alexander as his heir-designate. While Domnall was mutilated and imprisoned, dying in 1099, Edmund was more fortunate. He was tonsured and sent to the Cluniac monastery at Montacute in Somerset. The exact date of his death is unknown.2

  • Marriage*: He married Aoife O'Duibhne, daughter of Paul "the Sporran" MacDuibhn (O'Duin) Lord of Lochow and Marion (?) of Man, circa 1050 in Scotland.1
  • Biography*: In traditional genealogies of the Clan Campbell, its origins are placed amongst the ancient Britons of Strathclyde; the earliest Campbell in written records is Gillespie who is recorded in 1263. Early grants to Gillespie and his relations were almost all in east-central Scotland, but the family's connection with Argyll came some generations before, when a Campbell married the heiress of the O'Duines and she brought with her the Lordship of Loch Awe. Because of this the early clan name was Clan O' Duine and this was later supplanted by the style Clann Diarmaid. This name came from a fancied connection to Diarmid the Boar, a great hero from early Celtic mythology.2
