    Dougald Allan MacFarlane, age 93 of Halifax Nova Scotia, passed away April 24, 2018 at Hants Community Hospital. Born in Southwest Margaree Cape Breton, Dougald was the son of John Alex MacFarlane and Mary Ann Gillis. He joined the RCAF and was honorably discharged in 1945, after which he attended Saint Francis Xavier University, graduating in 1948 with a B.A. and in 1949 with a B.Ed. In 1951 he earned an M.A. Economics at McGill University. In the 1960s, he earned a PhD in Economics at University of Washington, Seattle. He taught at the University of Washington, at Notre Dame, for the United Nations FAO in South Korea, University of California San Jose, Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, and St. Francis Xavier University. He then worked for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans until his retirement. He had a great love of opera music and his Gaelic heritage, a passion he shared with his dear cousin and friend Margaret Gillis. He worked tirelessly for the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and for the wellbeing of refugees, making sure many were able to live, work, and obtain permanent residency in Canada. He is survived by his sister, Sr. Catherine MacFarlane; children, Jon-Alex (Catriona) and Andrew (Cheryl Verville) MacFarlane, and Monique (Marty Crouse) MacFarlane Conrad, and their mother, Lise Bertrand, his former wife and great friend. He was a loving and joyful grandfather to Aidan, Alyson, Fiona, Jack, Owen, and Sophia. He is predeceased by his parents; his siblings, Janet, Hugh, Mary, Margaret, Douglas and Malcolm, and his wife, Margaret Brackett. The MacFarlane family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Valerie Ross, Dr. Catherine Smith, and the nursing staff of Unit 200 at Hants Community Hospital for their expert care and kindness, as well as to the staff at Aberdeen Hall who always looked out for him. Visitation will occur Sunday, April 29 from 6-8 p.m. at Snow’s Funeral Home on Lacewood Dr., and the funeral will take place at St. Benedict Church, 45 Radcliffe Dr. in Halifax on Monday, April 30 at 10:30 a.m. with reception to follow. Interment will take place the following day at St. Joseph’s Parish in Southwest Margaree. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society or ISANS.     Died December 23, 2011after a massive stroke and three days of heroic effort to survive, surrounded by her husband and all of her children at the Cape Cod Hospital. Mary was born January 5, 1926 in Upper Margaree, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Daughter of John Alex and Mary MacFarlane
    Mary graduated from St. Joseph’s Nursing School in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia in 1947, came to Boston in 1948 and worked at Milton Hospital and after as a Nursing Supervisor at the Massachusetts Hospital for Children in Canton.
    Mary Married Lloyd MacDonald on August 30, 1952, had seven children and 18 grandchildren. Mary is survived by her husband, her son Lloyd (wife Josie), Gary McDonald, Jane Porter (husband Ernie), Catherine Brown, Douglas (wife Kelly), Shirley Davies (husband Richard), john (wife Kimberly). She is also survived by her brother Dougald MacFarlane, Halifax, N.S., Douglas MacFarlane, Medford, MA, sister Catherine MacFarlane, Eskasoni, N.S.
    Mary was fortunate to be actively engaged in a busy life. She was a daily communicant at Holy Trinity Parish in Harwich, a volunteer at Holy Trinity Family Pantry and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. She gave selflessly of her time and energy right up to the end. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
    A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 4-8 pm at the Doane, Beal and Ames Funeral Home on Route 28 in West Harwich. The Funeral Mass will be on Wednesday, December 28 at 10 am at Holy Trinity Church on Route 28 in West Harwich. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society, box 682, W.     Cape Breton Post, September 11, 2004 - MARGARET MULLANEY - 77 - Scotsville - Passed away quietly surrounded by her familly after a very short illness while at the home of her daughter Debbie at Port Royal. She was the daughter of the late John Alex MacFarlane and Mary Ann (Gillis) of Upper Margaree. She enjoyed being in the company of family and neighbours and was deeply committed to her community. Margaret displayed a deep compassion for people and was always ready to serve those in need. She led a life that was enriched by a deep faith in God and by the love of her family. She was blessed with a gift to touch everyone she met with kindness and humour. She is survived by her children, John (Allana) of Frankville, Jesslyn of Ottawa, Cathaerine of Grande Prairie, Debbie (Victor) Maddalena of Port Royal, Bernie (Heather) of Middle Sackville, and 10 grandchildren, brother Dougald of Halifax, and Douglas of Massachusetts, sisters Mary McDonald of Massachusetts, and Catherine MacFarlane, CSM, of St. Andrews, and a great number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John Robert, sister Janet and brothers, Hughie and Malcolm. She spent many happy years serving as housekeeper for the priests of Stella Maris and St. Margaret's parishes of Inverness and Broad Cove. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Visitation will be at the Inverness Funeral Home beginning Sunday 2-4 & 7-9 pm and Monday 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph's Church, Southwest Margaree, Tuesday, September 14, 2004 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to local community charities, including Inverness Manor, Inverness Consolidated Hospital, Scotsville Fire Hall or St. Joseph's Parish, Southwest Margaree.9
